The Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice, Czech Republic, the artist's birthplace, is run by the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the MAK as a joint branch. The baroque town house was redesigned by Hoffmann himself in 1910/1911 in the spirit of Viennese Modernism. Itai Margula has been responsible for the design of the annual exhibitions since 2014.
2014/2015: "Collegiality and Controversy. Josef Hoffmann and the architects of Moravian Modernism from the Wagner School in Vienna".
"Collegiality and Controversy" was the exhibition on the life and work of Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) at the Josef Hoffmann Museum, Brtnice, and contrasted Hoffmann's œuvre with that of two other Wagner students. Like Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908) and Leopold Bauer (1872-1938) belonged to a generation of talented architects from the Moravian provinces who had a decisive influence on architecture in Vienna around 1900. A targeted selection of approximately 50 drawings, photos and texts outlines their role in the architecture of the imperial capital in Vienna around 1900 and addresses Hoffmann's contribution to architectural renewal in Moravia.
2015/2016: "The Private Josef Hoffmann. Housing Wanderings"
The exhibition "The Private Josef Hoffmann. Flat Walks" at the Josef Hoffmann Museum offered the opportunity to embark on a flat walk in the spirit of Adolf Loos through Josef Hoffmann's residential ensembles. Never-before-seen objects from Josef Hoffmann's private collection, which were inspiration, household items and collector's items, were brought together with contemporary photographic documents that Hoffmann ordered and staged or casually took himself as souvenir photos.
2016/2017: "Josef Hoffmann - Josef Frank. From the 'infinite set' to the open system".
This year, the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice was dedicated to the relationship between Josef Hoffmann and Josef Frank. Thematically, "Josef Hoffmann - Josef Frank" followed on from the monographic exhibition "Josef Frank: Against Design" at the MAK in Vienna. For the first time, Frank's works were presented in the Czech Republic, which, through their free and individual, open system of design, contrasted with Hoffmann's idea of the overall design of an interior - his garniture thinking.
2017/2018: "Josef Hoffmann - Otto Wagner. On the Use and Effect of Architecture"
"Of the Use and Effect of Architecture" at the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice was dedicated to Josef Hoffmann's (1870-1956) relationship with his teacher Otto Wagner (1841-1918), whose death anniversary in 2018 was the centenary. The training with Otto Wagner in the special school for architecture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, the joint work in Wagner's studio and in the Secession, and Wagner's promotion to professor at the Imperial and Royal School of Arts and Crafts were decisive for Hoffmann's career. Kunstgewerbeschule were decisive.
Das Josef Hoffmann Museum im tschechischen Brtnice, das Geburtshaus des Künstlers, wird von der Mährischen Galerie in Brno und vom MAK als gemeinsame Expositur geführt. Das barocke Bürgerhaus wurde von Hoffmann selbst 1910/1911 im Sinne der Wiener Moderne umgestaltet. Seit 2014 zeichnet Itai Margula für die Gestaltung der Jahresausstellungen verantwortlich.
2014/2015: »Kollegialität und Kontroverse. Josef Hoffmann und die Architekten der Mährischen Moderne aus der Wagnerschule in Wien«
»Kollegialität und Kontroverse« war die Ausstellung zu Leben und Werk Josef Hoffmanns (1870–1956) im Josef Hoffmann Museum, Brtnice, und stellte Hoffmanns Œuvre jenem von zwei weiteren Wagner-Schülern gegenüber. Wie Hoffmann gehörten auch Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867–1908) und Leopold Bauer (1872–1938) einer Generation talentierter Architekten aus der mährischen Provinz an, welche die Baukunst in Wien um 1900 entscheidend prägten. Eine gezielte Auswahl von zirka 50 Zeichnungen, Fotos und Texten skizziert ihre Rolle für die Baukunst der kaiserlichen Hauptstadt in Wien um 1900 und thematisiert den Beitrag Hoffmanns zur architektonischen Erneuerung in Mähren.
2015/2016: »Der private Josef Hoffmann. Wohnungswanderungen«
Die Ausstellung »Der private Josef Hoffmann. Wohnungswanderungen« im Josef Hoffmann Museum bot die Möglichkeit, sich auf eine Wohnungswanderung im Sinne Adolf Loos’ durch die Wohnensembles Josef Hoffmanns zu begeben. Es wurden noch nie gezeigte Objekte aus dem Privatbesitz Josef Hoffmanns, die Inspiration, Hausrat und Sammelobjekt waren, mit zeitgenössischen Fotodokumenten, die Hoffmann bestellte und inszenierte oder als Erinnerungsfotos beiläufig selbst aufnahm, zusammengeführt.
2016/2017: »Josef Hoffmann – Josef Frank. Von der ›unendlichen Garnitur‹ zum offenen System«
In diesem Jahr widmete sich das Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice der Beziehung zwischen Josef Hoffmann und Josef Frank. Thematisch schloss »Josef Hoffmann – Josef Frank« an die monografische Ausstellung »Josef Frank: Against Design« im MAK in Wien an. Erstmals wurden in Tschechien Arbeiten Franks präsentiert, die durch ihr freies und individuelles, offenes System der Gestaltung der Idee Hoffmanns von der Gesamtgestaltung einer Einrichtung – seinem Garniturdenken – gegenüberstanden.
2017/2018: »Josef Hoffmann – Otto Wagner. Vom Nutzen und Wirken der Architektur«
»Vom Nutzen und Wirken der Architektur« im Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice war dem Verhältnis Josef Hoffmanns (1870–1956) zu seinem Lehrer Otto Wagner (1841–1918) gewidmet, dessen Todestag sich 2018 zum hundertsten Mal jährte. Für Hoffmanns Karriere waren die Ausbildung bei Otto Wagner in der Specialschule für Architektur an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste, die gemeinsame Arbeit in dessen Atelier und in der Secession sowie Wagners Förderung bei der Bestellung zum Professor an der k. u. k. Kunstgewerbeschule entscheidend.
2018: "Josef Hoffmann - Koloman Moser"
The 2018 annual exhibition at the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice was dedicated to the relationship between Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and the annual regent Koloman Moser (1868-1918), whose death anniversary in 2018 was the centenary. Moser is considered one of the protagonists of artistic renewal in Vienna around 1900. As a co-founder of the Association of Fine Artists of Austria - Secession in 1897 and as a teacher of decorative painting at the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1899 and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903, always with Josef Hoffmann as a companion, he made a decisive contribution to the establishment of stylistic art in Austria.
2019/2021: "Josef Hoffmann - Otto Prutscher".
The 2019 annual exhibition at the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice was dedicated to Josef Hoffmann's (1870-1956) relationship with Otto Prutscher (1880-1949). Otto Prutscher, ten years younger than Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos, belonged to the first generation of students at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, who were to benefit from the reform of teaching under the direction of Felician von Myrbach and from young professors such as Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser.
2018: »Josef Hoffmann – Koloman Moser«
Die Jahresausstellung 2018 im Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice widmete sich dem Verhältnis Josef Hoffmanns (1870–1956) zum Jahresregenten Koloman Moser (1868–1918), dessen Todestag sich 2018 zum hundertsten Mal jährte. Moser gilt als einer der Protagonisten der künstlerischen Erneuerung in Wien um 1900. Als Mitbegründer der Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs – Secession 1897 sowie als Lehrer für dekorative Malerei an der Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule ab 1899 und Mitbegründer der Wiener Werkstätte 1903, immer mit Josef Hoffmann als Weggefährten, hat er Entscheidendes zur Durchsetzung der Stilkunst in Österreich beigetragen.
2019/2021: »Josef Hoffmann – Otto Prutscher«
Die Jahresausstellung 2019 im Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice widmete sich dem Verhältnis Josef Hoffmanns (1870–1956) zu Otto Prutscher (1880–1949). Otto Prutscher, zehn Jahre jünger als Josef Hoffmann und Adolf Loos, gehörte der ersten Schülergeneration der Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule an, die von der Reform des Unterrichts unter der Direktion Felician von Myrbachs und von den jungen Professoren wie Josef Hoffmann und Koloman Moser profitieren sollte.
